more hard rock

hard rock hotel, macau

I’m not sure Hemlock liked it too much, but I had a good time at the Hard Rock Hotel in Macau. Hemlock obviously writes a better review. So I’ll just post some photos.

So, top left, left to right, etc, we have:

The mugs Hemlock mentioned.
Round the back, a room that seems to go nowhere with big light fixture or something.
The foyer, from the R Bar.
Flea’s bass. Apparently. Super-clean as Hemlock points out.
The cinema seats at the Macau Tower. Awful. Do not go.
The only snacks available at the cinema – Blue Crisps.
The space-age seats on the free bus.
Wild neon lighting on the bus x 2.

Anyway, I liked it. Liked the vibe, music everywhere – G ‘n’ R, Bowie, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Oasis, Killers, Mungo Jerry, generic American rock, in two days I only heard one repeat tune. The taxi dude outside with the baton light thing was pretending it was a guitar. It did smell nice – “some sort of aromatherapy gizmo that infuses the shopping mall with a heady whiff of lavender“. The room was OK but the fridge was difficult to open, TV was good, iPod dock in the room, great pool, underwater speakers, rubbish food court, couldn’t find a proper coffee shop, the mall part is a bit small/weird. Didn’t check out the casino or The Bubble. But I will be back!

More pics later.

Still not got around to writing these up:

  • The Pool Palaver
  • The Powwwwwwn on TV Room Service Sitch
  • FMPMSPD’s surprises (the bring your camera text was for a reason!)

Not got the energy right now, so I’ll just post the reasons for FMPMSPD’s text.

Careful – NSFW.

grand lisboa macau

Decided to try out the Grand Lisboa in Macau this weekend. Little bit mental really – expensive.

Speed verdict: wouldn’t stay there again for that money.

It was about HK$2500 a night. Everything in the mini-bar was free though they told me … alas, the mini-bar was pretty rubbish – Coke x 2, Sprite x 2, San Mig x 1, apple juice x 1, water x 1, Ribena x 1 (Rimbena as FMPMSPD says). Think that was pretty much it for the mini-bar.

No bottles of water or snacks anywhere – thought that was strange. There are usually a couple of complimentary bottles of water and snacks you can pay for somewhere. Maybe I didn’t look properly.

The staff were pretty good, but quite a slow check-in. English skills not the best, but this is China and I can’t speak Mandarin or Cantonese, so not complaining.

Anyway, some pics:

Not toooooo shabby, if a little over the top. Jacuzzi, steam shower, super heavy, mostly Chinese, remote control for the B&O TV (story there, later), TV in the loo, and behind the bathroom mirror, surround sound, Hermès SOAP and stuff.

So, it was OK, but not as awesome as I expected.

What didn’t I like? Time for some bullets …

  • You had to take your room key and passport/ID to get into the pool area.
  • Security staff at the casino entrance were a bit feisty.
  • The “pay-per-view” movies were all free, but you had to watch from wherever in the movie it was. If you get me. Not that many of them either. OK, that’s a little bit fussy. FMPMSPD watched The Happening. I told her not to, but she did anyway. “That’s it?! Nothing happened!” I was reading. Recommended BTW.
  • The, er, Al Capowwwwwn on the adult channels (also free) was, er, soft-core. “No cock?!” – FMPMSPD.
  • Mini-bar was rubbish.
  • Remote control for the TV was a little hard to use.
  • The casino staff were pretty dull. I like a bit of banter from the croupier.

I don’t know, maybe I’m too fussy. I just like the whole vibe more at The Venetian.

The food was pretty good at the noodle place. The cafe place wasn’t that good though, can’t remember the name though, sorry. It was completely empty too.

Oh, go to the noodle place and order Chinese tea to check out the tea/water pouring dude. Awesome kettle skills! You can also watch them preparing the food. One of the chefs had something balanced on his head and was shaving pieces off it. Looked like dough. I tried to get a photo:

Didn’t come out very well.

Another little issue was the rain. Pretty noisy. It’s fucking distracting! (NSFW – swearing!)

I tried to record it:

Ah, I gotta go. Stuff to do. Will finish this off tomorrow. Still to come:

  • The Pool Palaver
  • The Powwwwwwn on TV Room Service Sitch
  • FMPMSPD’s surprises (the bring your camera text was for a reason!)

macau again

Off again.

Msg from FMPMSPD:

Can you bring my bikini and high heels? Don’t forget your camera.

That motherfucker’s a 10-4!

presents

After going CB the other weekend I decided on an Ian Cognito Weekend in Macau. Head-down, quiet, no booze, rest, read, reset.

FMPMSPD was in Jakarta figuring out what to do. I told her I was going to Macau so she decided to try to get in there. Pretty cheap on Viva Macau Airlines – something like MOP $2500 . Can be as cheap as MOP $1300! You have to pay for your food and checked in luggage though.

At first I was a little put out – I had planned for some Shaky time, but then I remembered that she is cool and easy-going so it would all be OK. Plus her boobs are quite simply a phenomenon.

She managed to get in, no questions asked, and wandered out from immigration beaming her wide-mouthed smile at me …. Mr Shaky!!!!!!

We headed to a cheapo hotel for the first night and then over to the Venetian for Saturday afternoon/night. As planned, we did nothing, just lazed about reading and sleeping. Was lovely. Feel recharged. I know it’s only been a day or so since the weekend but I’ve been Getting Shit Done since I got back, basically just stopped procrastinating.

On Sunday we popped to the casino for a bit of roulette before I headed home. It’s all luck and my luck was good! I always bet on 22 for some reason. It came in 3 times. Thangyow! Lost a bit back, but in the end it was a free weekend, which was nice.

Anyway, FMPMSPD had brought me a present from Indonesia. A metal model bike:

She’d lugged it from Surabaya to HK, back to Surabaya, then to Jakarta, then to Macau. She was so worried I wouldn’t like it. What’s not to like!?

I’d got her some authentic Australian clothing:

So what new words have I got for you?

Madicine – medicine
Australi – Australia
Chibi chaba – jibber jabber
Papa G – G’s dad
Gumbling – gambling
Bickel/Bicycel – bicycle
Fress – fresh
Are you OK?! – when I say something ridiculous.

BTW, Spike is right, download this somehow: Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse Present: Dark Night of the Soul.
