lucky louie

Mixed reviews, but I’m enjoying it. Lucky Louie. [via The Snoop]

From:

The comedy is nifty, light and kind, even as it tries to be real, slitting open the stand-up themes of marital sex, masturbation and dope smoking until it’s dirty enough to convince you that you’re not being condescended to, but smart enough not to be grim. That’s a huge feat.

To:

A show so vile, it makes you think the company’s arrogant It’s Not TV — It’s HBO slogan isn’t a brag — it’s a threat.

everest: beyond the limit

Second series starts on Tuesday. I think series one was the best, most intense, TV I’ve ever watched. I was just hooked.

Wonder if this will work:

friday night lights

Currently digging on Friday Night Lights.

It gets good reviews over at Metacritic, e.g. at the Washington Post:

Extraordinary in just about every conceivable way — but especially in the quality of its cast.

All about American footy, but you don’t have to be into American footy to enjoy it. Apparently it’s a spot on portrayal of small town America and high school football.

In HMV in HK, the box set is going for $239. 16 hours for $239, that’s a 0.249 per min! That looks good on the DVD Box Set Value Graph.

Talking of graphs and nerds.

a song of fire and ice

Bit late on this one:

HBO has acquired the rights to turn George R.R. Martin’s bestselling fantasy series “A Song of Fire & Ice” into a dramatic series

I hope it’s awesome, because the books are. You don’t have to be massively into fantasy literature to enjoy this series. It’s awesome. Trust me:

Martin’s series has drawn comparisons to J.R.R. Tolkien, because both are period epics set in imagined lands. But Martin has eschewed Tolkien’s good-vs.-evil theme in favor of flawed characters from seven noble families.

The book has a decidedly adult bent, with sex and violence comparable to series like “Rome” and “Deadwood.”

New season of Lost - WTF is going on there then?

Guess what’s back tonight? Battlestar Galactica.

So what’s new for me this, er, season. Well, enjoying these:

Studio 60 on Sunset Strip -if you liked Sportsnight and the early West Wing, then you’ll like this. Or at least recognise it. Sorkin producing. I love it.
Jericho - post nuclear what’s going on thing.

Only seen a couple of each of the shows below, so will wait to see how I feel about them:

Shark - James Woods - lawyer show.
Vanished - guess what happens in this show? Someone vanishes.
Kidnapped - guess what happens in this show? Someone is kidnapped.
Six Degrees - JJ Abrams of Lost/Alias fame - six strangers in New York who are drawn together through a series of coincidences and interactions.
Heroes - a bunch of people realise they have super powers.
Smith - professional thieves thing with Ray Liotta.

Not seen, but must check out:

The Nine. From Metacritic:

Nine one-time strangers are now linked by a 52-hour period when they were held as hostages during a bank robbery. The show begins after the event occurred, and each week an additional ten minutes of the robbery will be revealed in flashbacks. At least there’s no hatch.

Returning:

Lost - back oct 4th for 6 eps, then another 17 in Feb 2007.
The Wire - look at that score!
Weeds.
The Office (US).

And of course, Extras, which is just getting better and better. Chubby Little Loser. Count Fuckula. The Agent. Barry. Well for me it’s The Agent - just great. The chat-up scene is brilliant.

caprica

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaat. Brilliant - a spin-off from Battlestar Galactica called Caprica:

Caprica is an upcoming television series described as “television’s first science fiction family saga,” based on the fictional universe of Battlestar Galactica and set on the fictional planet Caprica, around fifty years before the events depicted in the 2004 series. It will tell the story of the Twelve Colonies at peace and living in a society not unlike our own. But high-technology and a startling breakthrough in robotics brings to life the age-old dream of marrying artificial intelligence with mechanical bodies to create the first living robots–the Cylons. They are researched and built, ultimately leading to the Cylon War. The series will revolve around two families, the Adamas (the family of William Adama, who will one day become the Commander of the Battlestar Galactica) and the Graystones. Caprica weaves corporate intrigue, techno-action and sexual politics into this science fiction family saga.

[Okaaaaay, so this news is five months old…..]
