for hemlock

Hemlock asks:

Also on the WTO front – psychopathic Korean farmers tell the South China Morning Post that they can’t rule out suicide “as a protest option.” What’s “Don’t let us stop you – is there anything we can do to help?” in Korean?

wto swampy count pt 1

Zero so far, although I did see two long haired guys in the IFC mall. One had a mask on. Not a gas mask though. Alas.

Also two guys outside the IFC mall. They were wearing suits and smoking. They could have just been office workers, but to my eye, they had a look of the undesirable.

If I were to plan an ‘event’ to disrupt the IFC or Exchange Sq., I would scope it out first, see the new security measures. To do this, I would dress as a normal office worker. Makes sense right?

So I will be keeping my eyes open for guys in suits, with these ears.

Tomorrow, dressed in pin stripe suit and a tie I bought at Carpetland, I will investigate further, with a shoe shine in Wan Chai.

If only I had a bowler hat.

Did it get a new lid? Some sort of scaffolding on top?

very strong

It is a bit chilly but nothing ridiculous.

The doorman who doesn’t know my name (he just calls me “Gentleman” - which I love, so I’m not going to tell him my name) thinks I am “very strong” as to deal with the chill I have merely rolled down my sleeves and not donned a North Face jacket and Burberry scarf.

Howwwwwwwever, tonight is my first Christmas party, and I have heard tell that it is outside. Les oeuf! I’m the appointed camerae-man so I’ve got my camerae on my desk, primed, ready to catch one of the Black Kites up close.

encryption in hong kong

Anyone know if you can be forced to give out your encryption key here in HK?

I think you can in the UK. More here.

Thinking of a bit of FileVault or PGP action tonight.

This conviction is all over the news, but what’s this:

“Since [Chan’s] conviction two weeks ago, we have not found any cases of local BT users uploading illegally distributed works from the forum.”

So they are just looking at the forums? Not checking traffic going to certain IPs and seeing what data are in there?

hkexpats.com

I cannot believe I have just found this site - HKExpats.com. Where have I been!?

hkexpats.com (HKxp) is a new online portal specifically designed for expats moving to and living in Hong Kong. It is run by expats for expats.

On a day to day basis HKExpats.com is run by a couple of expats who work within the software development field in Hong Kong. They can normally be found by looking for ‘ServerGuy’ and ‘HKBloke’ in the site forums. On a general basis the site is run by the community as without visitors the site wouldn’t exist.

What a beautifully designed site! Nice work ServerGuy and HKBloke!

So pay it a visit if you like. Support HKxp! The forums seem quite active and are sooooooo much nicer than the other place. You know where I mean.

starbucks challenge

UPDATE: The Starbucks in Exchange Sq., Hong Kong passed. They had the Fair Trade coffee.

I’ll be trying the Starbucks Challenge later.

Regardless of politics, most of us agree on one thing: If a company makes a promise, it should stick to it.

According to its own policy (PDF), Starbucks will make fair trade coffee for you, any day of the week, in the 23 countries it is licensed to including: Australia, Austria, Canada, China, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, the U.K. and the U.S.

But just how easy is it to get a fair trade coffee in a Starbucks in one of those countries?

We aim to find out.

Join the challenge:

1) Simply visit your local Starbucks and ask: “Could I get a cup of fair trade coffee?”

2) Tell us what happened next.

My mate had a quick read:

“In fiscal 2003, when prices for commercial-grade Arabica coffee ranged from $0.55-$0.70 per pound, Starbucks paid an average of $1.20 per pound for all our coffee.”

Can anyone else see the conversation going like this:

“Crap we forgot to close out that long Arabica coffee future we had and got filled on 100,000 pounds at $1.20.”
“Bugger, give it to the marketing dept and see if they can spin it somehow.”

Soooooo cynical.
