new blog

New to me, via Spike, Perennial Ex-Pat.

I’m English and I live in Macau. Nuff said

I think he’s a scouser, he loves the UKNova and the Wiki, the Flickr, the footy, the birds and The Hoff.

Sure I’ve seen this gag before.

spam

I’m utterly sick and tired of comment spam, I get about one every two or three minutes. I have Spam Karma installed, and that keeps the spam off the page, but I get emails about the spam and it takes up my bandwidth. So, I’ve installed Referrer Karma which is supposed to block certain IPs from even reaching your site. It even integrates with the Spam Karma balcklist. You can see the logs here, and it seems to be working OK so far.

Please, if you have any issues accessing the site, please let me know. Erm, is it worth me putting that? If you can’t access the site, you can’t see it…..

I also added a rewrite rule to my .htaccess file, as suggested by Dr. Dave:

RewriteRule ^blog/.*
http://shakykaiser.com/blog/wp-content/referrer-karma.php
?rk_redirect_to=&rk_ban_this_ip=1 [NC,L]

This rule insures that any spambot randomly trying to locate a Wordpress script (e.g. wp-comments-post.php) will end up in my permanent banlist: not only will they receive a 403, but the next time they try accessing any other areas of my blog, they’ll still receive a 403.

So let’s see, spam count up until now was 3224, plus the 1400 I reset when I fooked something up, 1000 of which came in the last day or so. Let’s see if this slows them down.

UPDATE: 20 mins in and it’s already blocked 27 attempts.

mybloglog

How many people click the outgoing links you put in your posts?

Find out with MyBlogLog:

Wouldn’t it be great to know what content your readers like the most? MyBlogLog enables you to track when outgoing links are clicked by your visitors. With this information, you can tune your site to be most engaging for your readers and ensure that they come back over and over. You know how your visitors get to your site; shouldn’t you know where you send them?

broken

Parts of the site might be broken for a while, e.g. comments. Currently upgrading to Wordpress 1.5.

UPDATE: should be just about OK now. Archives are not working as I would like (not showing the full posts), but everything else should be good. Let me know if anything weird happens.

hk phooey

A new HK blog. Mainly about the research projects that HK people demand!

As I am quite sure the more perceptive reader would have gathered by now, the behaviour of the HK Chinese drives the current writer to the point of utter distraction

I hope the writer takes a look at the queue that forms on the Mid Levels Escalator at lunchtime near the Octopus $2 machine and lift queueing behaviour.

“It’s fucking physics, you stupid twaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaats!”

quiet

Things will be quiet over here this week. Work visitors in town.

waterstone’s

Waterstone’s, the book shops I love to spend hours in when I’m back in the UK, has fired an employee for blogging.

We don’t know the full details of his employment contract, but it does seem harsh to fire someone who:

posted these comments in my OWN time, writing in my OWN home for my OWN blog. It’s not linked to any official Waterstone’s site and does not reflect their opinion but mine

He’s not happy. News is spreading though, it’s on Boing Boing now, with their 1mill + visitors a month.

Referrer Karma has eaten 14 referrer spams on this site in the last 3 days.
