a red one

Question:

How much money do you take out of the cashpoint (ATM) per visit?

Me, I take $1400 each time, unless there is a need for more.

I have a friend, let’s call him ‘Gunther’, who takes out $100. Sometimes $200. Usually more than once a day.

This drives me bananas. I’ll meet him for lunch and he’ll be in the queue at the ATM, meaning, not only is he wasting his time, he’s also wasting mine.

I CANNOT for the life of me figure out the logic behind taking out so little if you know you will need more soon.

He reckons it is because he might lose his wallet.

“When was the last time you lost your wallet?”
“Erm ….”
“See.”

My constant moaning and comments such as “Don’t ever tell me you are going to the cashpoint. Ever.” etc., may have had a breakthrough yesterday when he took out $900. But he is moaning about it now:

15:10:47 Fri <Gunther>i took out 900 on weds. you said it would last a week. Our survey said uh ah. Thurs.
15:11:02 Fri <Shaky> you went out!!
15:11:11 Fri <Shaky> cannot blame me!
15:11:16 Fri <Gunther> just for one.

$2000 a time. Usually per day. But then I dont come to HK very often…

  • Usually 800, unless I’m in wanchai after dark, in which case it’s 2200 to cover drinks, ming court, wank receptacles, kebab and taxi.

  • $3,800 – lucky number.

  • usually 800 on a Monday….. try to last till the weekend. More at the weekend! all depends on the weekend..

  • I take out $2,900 around once per week. It drives me crazy to see people queuing to get out $200 x 5 times a week – all this does is make the queue longer for normal people….and if you are off to east central, I thought that why Baks invented the secret “non spouse credit card” to manage the pleasure zone…

It is also amusing when you hear the Gunther response, what if I lose my wallet? If you lose your wallet losing a bit of cash is nothing to the pain of getting a new ID card, new credit cards and whatever else is in there…

Question – does anyone you know like getting $1,000 notes from the ATM?

  • I tend to take $800 out at a time. How long this lasts depends entirely – it could last half a day, or the best part of a week. My main spending is eating out and “stuff” (computer stuff, clothes… err… that’s about it really… it’s terribly dull being in a relationship), and I tend to pay for most of those things on my cards anyway.

The reason I take out $800 though, is that $1000 notes piss me off. I’d rather take out $800 and then $200, than $1000. Too many clerks look twice at $1000 notes.

  • one question is, gunther german and works for bayer?

  • not german. just ingrained in me to only take out minimum. in the uk it annoyed me that i couldnt take out a fiver from the atm! anyway, baby steps. started taking 900 but its causing minor panic, mostly as it makes me spend it alot quicker. case in point, doing stupid things like giving a ‘bar girl’ 100 dollars if she could change the music to “last christmas”…. the result was a german techno version… and i still paid….gutted… absolutely gutted…. thats a trip to the atm.

  • Exportgold – I don’t know anyone who likes the $1000 notes. I never take out multiples of 1000 just so I get some 100s.

    I like this idea:

    http://www.saltwater.squarespace.com/journal/2005/8/16/trouble-with-locals.html

“Cash machines should have a five minute time limit for any customer throughout the day. If any customer uses an ATM for more than five minutes, the bank deducts a grand from their account and donates it to charity. Two grand if it between the hours of 12-2.”
