Probably not entirely legal. Some of the real popular mashups have faced legal threats (Grey Album, Night at the Hip Hopera). Some of the artists encourage mashups though. e.g. Jay-Z was all for the Grey Album, but the record companies don’t like the idea that much.
They are crazy, I would love to have Night at the Hip Hopera on a CD and would pay for it.
Mashups introduce music to new audiences, and those new audiences will go out and buy stuff. Maybe.
