singapore

Never been there, so fancy a quick weekend trip.

Anyone have any bar/restaurant/hotel tips?

Ta!

Just a question, who in HK do you normally go through to book your tickets for these quick weekend trips ?

Well, sometimes directly with the airline on their website. Cathay, Philippine Airlines, Jetstar Asia for SG, then sometimes with Amy at Farrington Amex. They are not the cheapest, but I think she is the best.

Mohammed Sultan is a street with a whole string of bars - I have been drinking when visiting in the Next Page for the past ten years. Pool table at the back.

My personal favourite hotel for value for money is the Traders Hotel (http://www.shangri-la.com/singapore/traders/en/index.aspx ) - it is not that expensive but very comfortable. Oh and the fact that it is very close to Orchard Towers has nothing to do with anything.

Boat Quay is also a good place for drinks too.

I think I meant, Clarke Quay.

Hey I use Amy as well, she is the best I agree

The Fullarton – absolutely the full monty. even if only for a beer before a wander down Boat Quay. On the opposite bank are now some nice restaurant / bars

Get a reservation at the Raffles’ Tiffin room for high tea. Lunch is good too. Book at least a day in advance (as soon as you get in SNG. Ask the concierge).

The Marina Mandarin Hotel was nice, esp for the price. You’d like the dress of the girlies welcoming the clients. Really… It’s across the Mandarina from the Raffles and Carlton. Not the best location, but then again the price was very good. The Carlton hotel has a good pricing/quality ratio. Good location too: not far from Boat Quay/Clarke Quay, across Chijmes – a former Church and Catholic School, check that - a short ride from Orchard Road and its infamous Orchard Towers [look out for a big Air France sign on ground level. Go upstairs. Enjoy. It can’t be a coincidence that the Thai Embassy is located nearby…] Speaking about Orchard Road, my favourite hotel, when somebody else is paying, is nearby: Goodwood Park Hotel, on Scotts Road: an old fashioned hotel that seriously rocks. Not the flashiness of some, but very very nice. At the crossroad from Scotts and Orchard, you’ll find a steel and glass building [duh] that houses an Apple Centre [kinda small] and a good noodle restaurant, Nooch.

At the beginning of Scotts, there’s a cheap restaurant that serves sushi and dim sum. Not the best, but all you can eat for.. dunno, wasn’t much. Think the place is called Gapz, in Pacific Plaza. Across the road, just before the Goodwood, on the pavement, a small Viêtnamese joint that does a decent Pho. Very to recover halfway through the evening…
You can’t visit SNG w/out having Peranakan food. My fav is [for the food, not for the service, shiiiiiiit!] is Peranakan House, somewhere in the back streets of Orchard, right behind Orchard Towers.

If you dine on Boat Quay – good quality usually but not the cheapest in town – check out Maharajah for Indian food, the others are less good. Food there comes as hot [as in spicy] as you wish, and there are many Indian clients, so it’s kinda authentic [enough]. At the end of Boat Quay, near the Fullerton [beautiful] two Pubs [a third one in a side street]. My fav is Harry’s Bar. YMMV. Never digged Clarke Quay much, joints are not as good, except another Indian restaurant *inside* the buildings [what’s the point of goint to go to a Quay to dine inside?]. However, right across the river, there’s a Museum [quick visit to feel less guilty ;-)] and on the ground floor a very nice French-Vietnamese restaurant.

Hawkers [that’s still food, in case you wonder]: I had an enjoyable enough time at Lau Pasat, it’s opened 24/7 if memory serves, good mid-night pit stop. Not far from China Town.

Holland Village has a few decent places, but it’s expatville. Not my kind of place. However, nearby, in Bukit Timah, on Sixth Avenue I think, a Churrascaria to die for. All the meat you can eat for, hmmm, not too much anyway. Don’t drink beer, have wine, it helps putting more meat away… :-) I’ve seen a Cantonese family there once, I think they brought the shop close to bankruptcy…

Drinks, well again of course the Raffles, the Fullerton. The Esplanade has a few places too, with whatever passes for a view of the bay. Coupla nightclubs too if alcohol-weakened memory serves. There are a coupla good pubs around Orchard Towers, don’t ask the names, by then I couldn’t remember my hotel room number anymore [and with those numberless passes, now… tsk tsk tsk].

Brewerkz: a brewery on Clarke Quay [well actually, on the same side of the river as Boat Quay, but anyway]. Their beer is quite decent, kind of pricey though. Trendy place, duh. The hawkers, again, are a good place to drink a lot. Not the best environment but you can hardly beat the price :-) Tiger Beer by the jug, man…

I probably could scrounge more, than this should give a kick start to your weekend!

Mohammed Sultan is a bit passe these days. The scene is mainly at Clarke Quay, esp. Attica, where all the beautiful people hang out (so I have been told anyway). Drop me a mail if you want more tips mate…

I avoid anything with a “Quay” in the name - they bring on panic attacks. Unless you enjoy being ripped off with watered-down, priced-up drinks, molested by touts for supremely mediocre restaurants and want to meet lots of pleasant visitors from America and Japan.

I am past the admittance age for Mohammed Sultan myself, but am told it’s good.

There is a Belgian place in Far East Square (not Plaza, not Shopping Centre) in Chinatown run by John (I think): tall thin streak of pleasantness, he used to be the manager for Delaneys in Wanchai. That’s OK for a Duvel, a sausage and some frites.

Alternatively, find a friend or three and piss up at the Wine bars in the old barracks at Dempsey Rd, then hit Zouk, or the 4FoW if that takes your fancy.

The best hotel BY FAR (I am told by reliable sources) is small boutique place called The Scarlet: http://www.asiatravel.com/singapore/scarlet/
Plush and unique - quite an experience. Also in Chinatown.

p.s. Bring heat-resistant plastic. The prices burn everywhere.

    Typos:

“It’s across the Mandarina” ==> It’s across the *Marina
“what’s the point of goint to go to a Quay to dine” => what’s the point of going to a Quay to dine

    Addendum
Chijmes is now a place with bars and restaurants. The Spanish joint is okay. They sometimes have chicks pushing Heineken. Kinda cute. Some loud bars around too, and a good Chinese restaurant.
Empire Café is a nice restaurant at the south-west [I think] corner of the Raffles compound – the closest corner to the Carlton. A modernized kopi tiam, of sorts. The durian chendol was nice :-)

” ‘Why is your site called ‘Stupid White Men’?! ”

Because there’s no shortage of some such species to visit a most superior Singaporean chink website. BTW I am a motherfucking Singapore squid faggot and Lee Hsein loong travelled with me to stinking Hongkong for the specific purpose of blowing my half inch but wide base bathplug. And helping in soliciting stupid angmors for my virgin sisters.

hey need to clear up some stuff here.
I named my blog ‘Stupid White Men’ in reference to Bush Junior and company. His election was rigged and he hasn’t done anything but cut back library funding and drilling in alaska, as well as siphoning oil from iraq which he promised to give freedom to.
How do I know you might ask?
Michael Moore told me all, in his movie “Faranheit 9/11″ and his book ‘Stupid White Men’.

    Chill guys,
IM not a racist or sexist or discriminatory against any particular group of people.

The 1st comment under my name is the real me, go see the singapore flag. The second one is a poser.
    Go die u poser.
IM not from HK, IM not racist, IM not into hate crimes.
I’m just a proud singaporean who saw Shaky’s post on Cowboy Caleb’s blog and I thought I’d recommend Shaky some good singaporean food..

    Sheesh.
Some people can be so lame.

What time do bars close? Clubs?

    Ta.

  22. 22 the letter b  your flag — Singapore (definitely maybe)

it depends, those that are located at non-residential areas close between 3 am and 7am. the local closes at 2am though unless there’s live footy or rugby on.

forgot to mention, indochine waterfront - which dda mentioned about the french-viet thingy and the place where the london olympic team celebrated the win, very posh place from what i saw from the outside - as well as discounts for britcham members (hint, hint); devil’s bar if bartop dancin’s your thing; ice cold beer, my former stomping ground which is a pseudo north american bar; number five - or is number 9?- which is next door to ice cold beer, and more whose names escape me, all these located on emerald’s hill.

methinks i’m getting on as i seem to not able to remember more places.
