Still haven’t found a Gspot like app for the Mac, but you can find out the codec used like this:
Open the file in VLC. Pause the movie if you like. Open the Info window (Cmd-I). There should be listed ‘Stream 0′ and ‘Stream 1′ with little triangles. Press the triangles to get more detailed information.
you can also use ‘ffmpgX’ which is a video/audio conversion program.
when you open the file you want to convert, it gives you details of the video and audio formats like gspot.

Thank you for this, I have but didn’t think of using ‘ffmpgX’ as an alternative to GSpot on my Macs. That’ll work.
