		<description>I've always wondered about that and never got a satisfying answer from the CX people I know.

Upgrading people on a non-full flight means that you expose more people to the offering that you are actually making money on, thereby inducing them to want to actually purchase the product/service next time. If they know that upgrades are available on a particular airline, then people might be more willing to fly with that airline.

Although I think the argument was the airline isn't making money on that passenger anyway so why bother. And if upgrades are too common, it cheapens the people who buy business class seats themselves. Although it's usually the company expense account that gets the bill, so upgrading is just good PR.</description>

When I flew to HK for the first time to move here, I was the only person in Upper Class on a Virgin flight. So they definitely don't upgrade if the flight is not full. Not a single person!</description>

		<description>i was upgraded from biz to upper twice last year and on a third london-HK flight i upgraded myself by simply sitting in seat 1A. no one asked me until we were an hour or two away from landing here. if you shoot and don't score, take the law into your own hands and f*ck em all.</description>
