new year honours

Every member of England’s World Cup-winning rugby squad will receive awards with coach Clive Woodward leading the way in Queen Elizabeth’s New Year Honours List published on Wednesday.

Woodward gets a knighthood while captain Martin Johnson becomes a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).

The annual list confers symbolic, traditional honours on nearly 1,000 Britons from the famous, great and good to little-known public servants.

Wilkinson becomes an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) as does forward Jason Leonard, who won a record 112th international cap in the tournament’s semi-final, and forwards coach Andy Robinson.

England’s win sparked an outpouring of national pride in a country all too accustomed to sporting failure in recent years.

All the other players and back room staff are awarded MBEs (Members of the Order of the British Empire). CBEs are senior to OBEs, which in turn rank higher than MBEs.
